Day trip to Awana, Genting Highlands

As the weather is too hot and dry, we decided to drive up to Genting Highlands, just to cool down and catch some cool breeze up at the peak. After satisfied and enjoyed the "cooling effect", we had our dinner in Awana Resort. This time, we tried Korean food...at Bee Won Restaurant, dubbed "The Food & Beverage People's Choice".

We quickly ordered some recommendations as we could not resist the colourful dishes diplayed in the menu. Here comes the appetizer...some how looks like Cantonese dumplings or Zhio Ze.

This dish is called Jjin Man Doo, costs RM12.00 for 12 pieces...nice to eat by lightly dipping it in soy sauce.

Similar to conventional Korean cuisine style, we were also served with a variety of side dishes...and most of the side dishes taste good.

Wow, this dish looks hot and spicy...but once in your mouth, the flavour and taste enhanced our appetite. Not so hot and spicy as it may look...Yook Kae Jang costs RM20.00 per bowl.

Finally, the main course, Bulkogi Jun Sik, costs RM30.00, with generous portion of sweet and juicy beef stri-fried with onions, garlic and spring onion. Very tasty and best to eat in wraps of Romaine Lettuce, a bit of Korean miso paste, chili and raw garlic. What a unique taste...

We ended our dinner with a cup of Korean ginseng tea (RM3.00) and a plate complimentary watermelon cuts.

Restoran 52, Semenyih

Today, we feel like having good Chinese food yet cheap in price. So, we decided to take a drive to Restoran 52, located in Semenyih.

Here are some of the recommendations...just nice for the two of us.
This Freshwater Prawn Noodles (Sang Har Mee) is so good and the gravy is just simply irresistable. It came with 4 XL sized freshwater prawns and guess how much it costs? Just RM24.00 only...well worth the money.
Next we ordered the Lightly Steamed Tilapia in Superior Sauce (Yao Wat Fei Jao Yu)...and it tasted just amazing! Everything was fine, taste, flavour,texture...so good that we voted this dish is the best Tilapia dish we have ever tasted. Costs us only RM20.00 for this dish.
The last dish, Fried Salted Chicken Wings...just as delicious as the previous ones. Minimum order is 3 chicken wings...each costs RM2.50, very reasonable considering the effort in preparing it.
All in all, the lunch costs us only RM52.30, including Chinese tea.
Address of Restaurant 52....
52, Jalan Sungai Lalang, Semenyih;
Tel: 8723 8733
We took a longer way home, using the Semenyih Jalan Sungai Lalang road, passed through Nirvana Memorial Park and exit at Pekan Batu 18 in Hulu Langat. Throughout the journey, we passed by the Sg. Tekala Waterfall picnic spot as well as the magnificent Semenyih Dam...see photo below.

Crab Trails - Restoran Tak Fok, Aman Puri Kepong

Whenever we have craving for crabs, we head to Restoran Tak Fok for fresh crabs which are cooked in various styles such as Salted Egg Crabs, Sweet & Sour Crabs, "Kung Poh" Crabs, Salted Baked Crabs, Buttered Crabs, Cheese Crabs, Marmite Crabs, "Kam Heong" Crabs, Blackpepper Crabs and a few more types.

The distance from SS2 to Restoran Tak Fok is just 15 minutes drive using LDP Highway.

For Starter, we had Braised Sharkfins with Crab Meat, costing RM9.00 per bowl. This is the economy version but tastes good and satisfying.

We tried the "Dong Po" Meat and wow, the texture was so rich and the meat melted in our mouths...just forget the fatty parts and cholesterol control for a moment...surely will order again on the next visit. Just cost RM20.00 per portion, enough to feed a table of 5 persons.

We also had the Brinjal cooked in Claypot mixed with minced pork and salted fish. A very satisfying and appetizing dish! Try it and you will believe......

Finally, the much awaited "Kam Heong" Crabs have arrived. See how big are the claws? Just RM20.00/kg for a decent serving. This also must try.....

Bukit Tinggi Food Adventures

In the months of May and June, we made 2 gastronomic trips to the town of Bukit Tinggi, along the Karak Highway. The journey from SS2 to Bukit Tinggi town took us 1 hour. We had the options to either driving along the MRR2-Melawati link road or DUKE-Ampang highway from PJ.
The first trial was at Restoran Loong Sing, which was recommended by other food bloggers. We ordered some signature dishes suggested by the owner.

We had 1/2 portion of Steamed Kampung Chicken with liver and gizzards. The taste was just perfect, not too salty and rich with chicken stock flavour. Cost was RM23.00, considered reasonable.

Next, the highly recommended Steamed Cat Fish or "Pak Sou Kung", with fragrant and tasty superior soy sauce. Cost of this dish was RM30/kg, very cheap...compared to Tanjung Tualang where we were charged RM35/kg!

This is Homemade Tofu with Minced Pork, very tasty and the texture of the tofu was excellent! One of the best tofu dish we have ever tried. Cost only RM8.00 for a portion. Good bargain indeed :)

The second visit to Bukit Tinggi town, we decided to try out at another popular restaurant called
Restoran 126. We ordered some of the in-house recommended dishes as below and no regrets.

The Steamed Cat Fish in superior soy sauce was excellent, on par with Restoran Loong Sing's standard. Cost was RM30.00/kg, reasonable.

This is Tofu with Minced Pork, slightly below the benchmark level of Loong Sing's.

For seafood, we tried the Soy Sauce Braised Sea Prawns, which was XXL in size. A total of 7 pieces of XXL prawns weighed 500g, which cost RM35.00 per serving.

The Wild Boar meat cooked in black pepper was very well-marinated and did not taste gamy. The meat was tender and just perfectly cooked.
All in all we paid RM95.00 for the above 4 dishes with an additional Fried Watercrest vegetables excluding drinks......worth the distance travelled.

Short Stay in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan

Flashing back to Y2004, we experienced a 10-day free-and-easy sightseeing tour in Japan. We mainly focussed on trying various types of Japanese food, window shopping and countryside tour.

Lets start with food first.......

We had this Yakiniku meal or Korean BBQ at Fuji-Q Highland Theme Park, near Mount Fuji area. Cost per set meal was 1500 yen, with unlimited serving of hot green tea and a bowl of miso soup.
This restaurant is located at Sky Building in Yokohama City. Sashimi with salad served with a glass of Kirin beer. This was our welcome dinner organized by our Japanese friends.

On the next day, while strolling in the busy street in Kawasaki Railway Station, we stopped by a small Ramen stall to enjoy Char Siu Ramen. Imagine the broth being slowly boiled in pig bones + beef bones + chicken stock for more than 8 hours? The final outcome is the sweetest, most fragrant and tempting soup served with handmade ramen noodles. Not to say the tender and succulent char siu slices...just for 500 yen a bowl!

On the third day, we tried the Okonomiyaki, more like a Japanese (Osaka style) pan fried pancake with seafood toppings and very fine bonito fish (dancing fish) sheets. We had great fun trying our skills in mixing the batter and cook it to perfection... cost per set was 1200 yen.

At night, we had Monjyayaki (Tokyo style) which is more watery (actually more sauce)...which was quite unique. Anyway, both Okonomiyaki and Monjyayaki must be eaten hot and fast...cost per set was 1500 yen.

On the fourth day, we visited a friend's place (Iguchi san) in downtown Yokohama. Mrs Iguchi cooked some simple yet delicious food to welcome us. We had fried spring roll, Japanese fried rice (cha-han), salad and mapo tofu (slightly spicy).

WOW, what a fusion...Japanese, Chinese-Szechuan and Western.

On the fifth day, we visited another friend, Takami-san. I had the privilege to demonstrate my cooking skills this time. We had Malay style fried rice (nasi goreng) with egg, fried chicken marinated in cumin powder, Beijing style steamed Chinese cabbage with mixture of pork and beef mince and of course steamed Japanese tofu with fried onions. The cost of the meal for four persons was only 2,000 yen!

Now here comes the interesting places that we have visited......

This is Mount Fuji, taken from the exit of Fuji Safari Park. So nice and relaxing, on cloud nine...
We had a close up range with the lions at Fuji Safari Park. We actually drove the car into the park with freely roaming lions and other wild animals...cost per car was 2,500 yen, enter at own risk :)
We also visited the sunflower fields in Ebina. According to the owner of the fields, the sunflower petals would be used to make Japanese wine...and harvest season was on the way. We were fortunate to see the flowers before they were harvested. No cost incurred, absolutely free of charge.
As the Tokyo Fireworks festival was around the corner, we took the opportunity to witness fantastic forms of fireworks displays in Odaiba, Tokyo. Absolutely free!

Tokyo Tower, an interesting landmark in Tokyo. Used as a tourist spot, as well as tele-communication and radio/TV broadcasting tower...

And the night view of Shinjuku district, taken from Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) building at 45th floor...no entrance charge. But need to queue up and wait for our turn as limited
guests were allowed at one time...security reason maybe.

All our friends, at the farewell dinner held in a kisaten in Shin-Koyasu, Yokohama.
That's all... mata aimasho (See you again)!

Restoran Makanan Laut Thong Lok - Tanjung Tualang, Perak

On one of the sunny Saturday morning, we took a drive from SS2 to Kampar, Perak. From Kampar, we drove along the coastal road until we reached Gopeng then Batu Gajah and finally Tanjung Tualang, just following the road signs. The journey took us 3 hours...

We have a few recommended seafood restaurant and we decided to give Thong Lok Restaurant a try. We ordered 3 dishes as we intended to keep our stomach half-filled so that we can continue eating other stuffs later during the trip.

Freshwater Prawns cooked in Chinese Rice wine @ RM58/kg - Very succulent, juicy, fresh and meaty prawns cooked in exquisite Chinese rice wine. This cooking style maintained the natural flavours of the prawns. Must try!

Special Taufu with Thai sauce @ RM6.00 - Crispy outside and yet soft inside, very unqiue texture and one of the best tasted so far!

Salted egg Crab @ RM35/kg - Unique taste of sweet and salty crispy batter covering the crab shell. This is something different from the Klang Valley version of Salted Crab.

A very relaxing scenery taken at Westlake Homes area in Bandar Baru Kampar, nearby UTAR. It reminded me of Sunderland in UK...maybe.

Bread & Olive Cafe, Lookout Point Ampang-Hulu Langat Highway

Last Sunday evening, we took a short trip to Lookout Point, located along the Ampang-Hulu Langat Highway. The journey from SS2 PJ took about 1 hour, without any major traffic jam.

We had a 4-course alfresco dining on the hilltop overlooking KL city.

Starter 1- Quite a heavy one, Fatayer @ RM15.00 only, the Arabian pizza with 4 types of fillings - beef, chicken, goat's cheese and vegetables plus spicy topping in the middle.

Starter 2 - Chicken Kebab @ RM25.00, a bit pricy but the naan/bread is soft and tender. However the grilled chicken cutlets were a bit too cooked and dry.

Main dish - Lamb Shank @ RM29.00, which is very succulent and tender. The gravy is smooth and tasty. Must try!

Dessert - Tiramisu @ RM12.00, quite a big portion of chiffon cake with mascaporne cheese served in a wine glass...so tempting, right?

And lastly, a complimentary night view of KL city. Can you spot KLCC and KL Tower?

Wonder where is SS2..

Here is the arch at the uphill entrance to the cafe.

And lastly the map to the cafe...hope this will help.
